ACTIVITY ABOUT THE MOVIE: POPE JOAN

POPE JOAN BY DONNA WOOLFOLK

Profile: For centuries, the mystery of pope Joan was lingered. The author Donna Woolfolk Cross spent seven years researching the femenine pontiff mystery and the related time period for her historical novel Pope Joan (1996). She told  a ABC primetime live that she believed that Pope Joan was a real person based on the material available, It having found over 500 chronicle accounts of its existence. Mentions of Pope Joan can be found in a book by poet Giovanni Boccaccio and many other sources and images of a female pontiff can be seen in numerous artworks, including sculptures by Gian Lorenzo Bernini at the Basilica in St. Peters Square.

Personally, I like these films because we can see how education has evolved from our ancestors to date. Initially because education was forbidden for a woman  and they had to be a make housewife. All these thoughts is like the older people had, I think that was a wrong idea about what they thought especially for men who thought or feared that a woman the will command them.

Questions:
1. Why do you think was the reason why women could not previously studied?
2. If you lived in that time you support that thought?
3. For men: Did you consider yourself a macho man? why?
For women: Did you consider yourself a feminist? why?

  1. 1. Because men had the power and also because of the social imaginaries that time used to have.
    2. As proffesor Adelmo explanied one time. You wouldn't believe that "bullcrap" you would be maybe like the others throwing rocks to Jesus.
    3. I consider myself as another human being. I don't find the need to do that differentiation.

  2. 1. As Káiser said, men had the power to control every aspect of life, it was not 'correct' for society that a woman could study.
    2. I do not. Now, I can say I would not support that thought, but I would have to live in that time first to answer your question, and to know how I would act.
    3. No, I do not. For me that concept is stupid and wrong, 'macho men' does not exist, they only act like that to compensate a complex in their lives.

    2. You have an interesting perspective, but on the other hand, I cannot be sure of what men thought at that time, now we only can guess.

  3. 1) Because they knew that women are powerful and intelligent so, imagine if they gave study to powerful women at that time probably women could have control of society and that was impossible ...Nowadays women are having voice.
    2) We don't know... But power of men at that time was incredible so we as women were less than nothing.
    3) Nowadays women have voice and we defend our rights and if that is feminism yeah, we are feminists

  5. Miss. Hope you are fine.
This a very interesting movie about a "myth", which is more real that we think of. Actually, she does exist. According to some researches then share by a documentary, there was a female pope a long time ego. But in order to hide that fact, they, church, didn't talk about for many, many centuries till this currently one.

    1. Well, the explanation for that I do not really remind. I completely forgot it. (Bit there's one, the main one)

    2. Yes, I would. In that time many things were forbidden for women. Therefore it's clear I would accept the "laws".

    3. I consider myself as a human being. So neither macho man nor feminist. That's it.

2.Well, if I jugde it from our context point of view of course I wouldn't be in accord, but as in those epochs that was the way of looking at things, there's a great possibility of me acepting that,
3.I'm just running head to head with equality

  8. 1. We live in a society where the man is considerated the savior, the one who works and know everything and women were just an object to clean and satisfy the men, literally.
    2. Depending on what I know, I obviously wouln't be in agreement with that thought but living in that time I don't even know what is the correct thing to do.
    3. No I don't. we are at the 21st century and women are the same that we are and we try to keep it that way to make things equal.
